Consult your fertility specialist to learn more about the options available to boost your fertility.

Consult your fertility specialist to learn more about the options available to boost your fertility.

Egg freezing has become a common choice for many individuals as a way to elongate and preserve their fertility so they possess greater control over their pre-pregnancy journeys.

You may also choose to freeze your eggs to preserve your fertility at its prime, to protect your fertility before procedures that may compromise your ovaries and reproductive system (such as chemotherapy), or if you plan to undertake gender reassignment surgery.

When you freeze your eggs, you have the assurance that when you are ready to conceive, you have the chance to achieve a healthy pregnancy.

We’re happy to note that those who conceive after the egg freezing and thawing process have given birth to healthy babies, and the success rate for the procedure is relatively high.

Your introduction to the egg freezing process

On your first visit, the viability of your eggs for the freezing process will be checked. A blood test (that checks for AMH) will be carried out along with a pelvic scan.

You will first need to encourage ovarian stimulation in order to produce as many eggs as possible. To achieve this, you will be given a round of injections that will be self-administered.

The egg collection process will then take place under sedation in your fertility specialist’s office.

The eggs that are collected are then subject to a fast-freezing technique called vitrification.

When you’re ready, you can choose to thaw your unfertilised, frozen eggs. The eggs will be thawed and fertilised in a laboratory and any embryos that are formed will be placed in the uterus.

The answers to your questions

Freezing your eggs may be a relatively common procedure, but it is natural and healthy to ask the questions you want answers to so you’re familiar with the procedure, know what to expect, and are completely comfortable throughout the process.

Choosing to freeze your sperm is a way to give yourself more control and security in your fertility journey.

No matter what your plans or circumstances may be, sperm freezing can help you make sure you have a healthy reserve if you ever need it.

Although the cryopreservation procedure is minor, you may have a couple of questions about how it works. Take a look at the answers to some of the most common questions we get below.

The answers to your questions

How long can unfertilised eggs be frozen and stored?

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has set a ten-year storage limit for all frozen, unfertilised eggs.

What is the success rate of this procedure?

Because this process is relatively new, the number of women returning to thaw their eggs is still low. The success of frozen eggs ultimately depends on age and the quality of the eggs.

With the limited pool that has gone through the procedure thus far, success rates are high and encouraging.

How does the success of frozen eggs compare to the success of frozen embryos?

The embryo freezing procedure has been around for much longer than the egg freezing process.

This means that the procedure has been improved and any issues that have come up have been ironed out over the years.

The success rate for unfertilised, frozen eggs is currently half the success rate that frozen embryo procedures possess.

Ultimately, this means that there is a higher chance of conceiving through frozen embryos than frozen, unfertilised eggs. As new techniques and treatments enter the scene, however, these rates will improve.
