What is HyCoSy?

I Trust Fertility - website icons - IUI Treatment

HyCoSy or Hysterosalpingo Contrast Sonography is an advanced fertility investigation technique for identifying potential issues in fallopian tubes which may lead to fertility difficulties.

Fallopian tubes carry the egg from the ovaries to the uterus, where conception occurs. Any blocks or damages to the fallopian tubes may affect your chances of conceiving naturally.

These blocks and damages are not always visible in a regular ultrasound scan, which is when your doctor may suggest a HyCoSy scan to get a better view of your fallopian tubes.

HyCoSy is performed by injecting a medical contrast agent—which is safe and doesn’t cause any future fertility issues—into your cervix to visualise the fallopian tubes.

What is a saline scan?

A saline scan or Saline Hysterosonogram involves injecting saline into your uterine cavity during a regular ultrasound scan to improve visibility.

Your doctor may recommend a saline scan to evaluate the presence of any abnormal growth in your uterine cavity; abnormalities in the endometrial tissues; or other conditions which may damage the layers of tissue in your uterus and lead to fertility challenges.

A Saline Hysterosonogram procedure is usually performed after the end of the menstruation cycle in menstruating individuals. The procedure can be performed at any time of the month for non-menstruating individuals.

How is a HyCoSy procedure performed?

The HyCoSy procedure is performed transvaginally (internally). Your doctor will insert a vaginal speculum into your uterus through the vagina to take measurements of the endometrium, ovaries, and the uterus.

Then, a thin catheter is inserted into the neck of the uterus and a small amount of sterilised saline is injected into the uterus to check for any abnormalities in the uterine cavity.

Finally, a contrasting agent is passed through the fallopian tubes. The movement of the contrasting agent through the fallopian tubes is monitored to identify any blocks or damages in the tubes.

How is a Saline Hysterosonogram performed?

The Saline Hysterosonogram procedure is similar to the initial phase of the HyCoSy procedure. It begins with the insertion of the vaginal speculum to analyse the shape and measurements of the uterine cavity.

A small amount of saline is passed through a catheter into the uterus to check for polyps, fibroids, and scar tissues in the uterus.

Are there any risks associated with HyCoSy and saline scans?

National statistics state that 1 in 100 people might get a vaginal or pelvic infection after a HyCoSy or saline scan procedure.

Consult your doctor if you experience the following symptoms after HyCoSy:

  • High body temperature

  • Aching limbs

  • Smelly vaginal discharge

  • Spotting

How do I prepare for a HyCoSy or saline scan?

There is no preparation needed before a HyCoSy scan. You may, however, be asked to empty your bladder before the procedure to increase the accuracy of the results.

For a saline scan, your doctor may administer antibiotics and painkillers before the procedure to ease discomfort and reduce the risk of infection after the procedure.
