The questions surrounding fertility

The questions surrounding fertility

Fertility can be a loaded conversation and a sensitive topic for many. There are plenty of misconceptions that surround it and misunderstandings that can lead to feelings of isolation and confusion as well as misplaced blame.

We want to take the confusion and the taboo out of conversations surrounding fertility, and that mission begins with sharing the right information and knowledge. Here are the facts about fertility.

Are females or males more susceptible to fertility problems?

The percentages are equal.

30% of fertility struggles are rooted in female factors and 30% are attributed to male factors. 20% of challenges are a combination of male and female factors while the final 20% of cases are due to unexplained reasons.

How uncommon are fertility issues?

Fertility struggles are very common. In the UK, estimates state that one in five couples will face difficulties conceiving.

Why does fertility drop so early on in our lifespan?

Fertility starts dropping when a female turns 30 and when a male turns 40.

This is believed to be an evolutionary development because it would allow females to survive long enough to raise their families.

While modern life spans have elongated for many reasons, including medical advancements, we haven’t yet caught up from a fertility standpoint, which means our fertility has stayed the same even as our lifespans increased.

We also conduct tests and scans to try to pinpoint the root cause of your fertility struggles. This includes HyCoSy and saline scans, cyst aspiration, endometrial scratch, and sperm analysis.

We understand that it may not always be easy to take the first steps on your fertility journey. That’s why we hold regular fertility open events where you can speak to our specialists and gain an overview of our services before you proceed.

Fertility is different for everyone. This is important to keep in mind because while the root cause of fertility issues can often be found with the right tests and investigations, sometimes a clear explanation can never be found.

Even when the reason cannot be found, however, treatment can help you overcome certain challenges. Your fertility specialist will be able to guide you to the best course of action for you once they know more about your health and needs.

Having said that, a few factors that can affect fertility no matter what your gender may be are:

Age

This is a key reason for fertility challenges. This starts earlier for females as their fertility declines considerably past the age of 35.

Weight

Weight does play a role in your ability to conceive. Most treatments have a better chance of success with a BMI under 30 or up to 35 depending on the circumstances.

Smoking

In females, smoking can negatively affect the likelihood of conceiving, while smoking can affect semen quality in males. Giving up smoking at least three months before trying to conceive is recommended.

Alcohol

Avoiding alcohol can be the best course of action regardless of your gender if you have hopes of conceiving in the near future. Alcohol can reduce your chances of conceiving as well as the quality of your sperm.

Stress

While there is no conclusive evidence, research suggests that severe stress can impact ovulation, sperm production, and your overall sex drive. If you have started your fertility journey and feel stressed or anxious about the process, we have support groups and counselling available to help you through this time while protecting your mental and physical health.
